Blackhead, Blackdome, and Thomas Cole are perhaps the most recognized profiles of the Catskill mountains. These three peaks offer great hiking and exceptional views! They are the third, fourth, and fifth highest summits in the Catskill Mountains reaching just under 4,000 ft.
This will be an “out and back”-style hike. We will ascend the steep trail up Blackhead, gaining a great workout with views overlooking the Hudson Valley and surrounding mountains. This is the hard part! After we summit, there is a remarkable viewpoint of the Devil’s Path Peaks and the neighboring Blackdome summit!
The hike into the col and up Blackdome goes very quickly and has another outstanding viewpoint from a better vantage. The summits themselves are wooded, providing a true isolated wilderness feeling. From Blackdome, we will march over to Thomas Cole summit where we will eat lunch within the safety of Thomas Cole’s massive wooded summit. Afterwards, we will head back over to Blackdome and will have plenty of photo opportunities along the descent.
If you have never hiked in the Catskills, this is a great opportunity. The Catskills have a majestic poetic spirit that touches all who marvel at its magnificent features. Its beauty and character will have you wanting to come back for more!
